ANTIQUE DIVING HELMETS

Antique diving helmets and equipment has become a very sought after maritime antique. The best known examples are from Siebe Gorman and the 6 and 12 bolt examples are as popular as ever, they were known as "hats" or "hard hats" and became part of the standard diving dress. Siebe Gorman started developing their first diving helmet in the 1830's and by 1837 they had developed the surface supplied diving apparatus. This became known as the standard diving dress and was adopted by the Royal Navy, who opened the first diving school in 1843. The Siebe Gorman company underwent several changes and by 1870 they changed their name to Siebe & Gorman, In 1880 they changed name again to Siebe Gorman & Co.
