Here is our selection of antique ship's lanterns. Ship lamps come in many different shapes and sizes but most of them have a specific use or purpose. Navigation lamps: port, starboard, stern and masthead lamps indicate which direction a vessel is heading and this helps to prevent collisions at sea. Anchor lanterns indicate that a ship is at anchor and not moving. Signal lanterns are used for communication via morse code, but some lamps are just used for lighting such as bulkhead or companionway lamps. Most ships lamps can either be oil burning or electric, but most early ships that were fitted with electricity still carried oil burning lanterns for back up or emergency use.
